What
are your ideas for the future of Indiana Jones, in animation or otherwise?
From
Bill:
Hey
Rob,
A
pleasure to finally be writing into the Indy Opinion on a subject that excites
not only myself but probably the entire listening audience... the thoughts of
the Animated Adventures of Indiana Jones. To echo what Paul Dini said during his
interview on the Force-cast, a series in the style of the Fleischer serials or
Batman: The Animated Series would be absolutely awesome way to bring Dr. Jones
back to the small screen.
I
could see it being a weekly prime time series, hopefully broadcast at time where
some of the more 'adult' moments of the Indy series (though maybe not to the
extent of an exploding head, of course) could survive, but not so late that the
younger Indy fans would miss out on the adventures, as well.
As
far as the storyline would go, I could see more longevity being brought to the
series if it focused on the search for a single McGuffin per season, but with a
variety of different adventures along the way, including some one-shots that
could explore the lesser characters of the Indy-verse. Perhaps a Sallah-centric
episode or the tale of how Marcus actually got lost in his own museum. That last
one might sound dull at first, but in the hands of the right screenwriter it
could be quite entertaining. Mainly, having only one McGuffin a television
season would the writers preserve the reserve of major artifacts that are
available so that, by Season Three, Indy isn't stuck looking for the toothbrush
of the Apostle Paul or some such.
I
could also see each season being set within a certain year or set of years
throughout Indy's life, but you could also have flashbacks or flash-forwards to
pertinent stories that may tie into the main quest at the time. Likewise, as
with the aforementioned Batman: the Animated Series, perhaps some of Indy's
comic book adventures in the time period being explored could be animated at the
same time, perhaps adapted with the further knowledge that has been revealed in
Indy's life through subsequent movies. It would be a good way to retcon anything
that happens in the Indy EU that doesn't fit with the rest.
Even
just brainstorming here off of the top of my head, it becomes evident that in
the right hands, an animated Indy would have great potential for not just action
and adventure, but varied story and entertaining story-telling as well.
Likewise, it could be a good way to show the mainstream American audience that
televised cartoons, animation or whatever you want to call it need not just be a
series of fart gags, crude humor and pies in the face, but intelligent,
well-written entertainment for the whole family.
Keep
up the good work, Rob, and if Animation has a name, it must be Indiana Jones!
-Bill,
slowly but surely becoming an Indy-cast regular...
Another
from Bill:
Wow,
thanks for the quick reply, Rob.
I'm
a big animation buff myself, both American, Japanese and otherwise, so I guess I
fail to consider sometimes that not everyone would be as automatically excited
about such as show as I am. Heck, even Harrison Ford frowned on the idea, though
that could be because if Indy takes off in the realm of animation, he might be
afraid that he could be out of a job.
Kind
of like I was saying before, the success of such a show of this depends on the
type of writers they get and how seriously and genuinely they keep to the source
material. If they manage to hold true to the spirit of the movies, then they
have the potential for a real hit. If they try to 'kid-ify' it with Nazis
passing gas as they climb out of tanks and Sallah stepping in camel dung in
Cairo, well... let's just stick with the movies and say we never brought up this
subject. ;-)
I'm
actually trying to get into the comic industry and am working on a comic series
of my own that I'd like to get running, but in my private moments of letting my
imagination run free, I've entertained the idea of getting a gig writing for the
Indiana Jones Adventures digest with Dark Horse and have a running list of
adventure ideas I keep. Among them even includes one for Marcus getting lost in
his museum, which I think would be a great piece to work into a larger story.
Anyway, why mention all this? Well, anytime ones of these subjects about
future Indy stories or series comes up, it really gets my creative juices
flowing, so pardon any long e-mails when such subjects come up. Poor Ed had to
read a treatise on my Indy 5 idea way back when (I was actually the one to write
in about the plot with Short Round, the Peacock's Eye and the Spear of Longinus)
and I know some of the sentence structure I use can get somewhat unwieldy, so I
have to pity the poor
guy.
Since
you brought up the subject, I'll definitely let you guys know if there's
anything that can be done to improve the show, but, to be honest, I think
everyone involved with the Indy-cast is doing a fabulous job. It's appointment
listening for me every week and I just love the character and personality you
guys bring to it, even if you never actually interact with each other!
Anyway,
I didn't say it before, but you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy
Holiday. I'm pretty sure there should be a good presence from Dr. Jones under
the tree for me this year (and there's a poll subject for you right there-- What
was the most popular Indy present during the '08 holiday season). Take Care!

Keith:
Hey
Rob!!!
Keith here, and I just wanted to quickly share my opinion on the much talked
about animated Indy series with you and the listeners. First, I gotta be honest,
as much as I would love to see animated Indy, I'm not 100% behind it...My
concern would be quality stories.I think I speak for all of the Indy fans out
there when I say I don't want mediocre stories just for the sake of having more
Indy. I think one of the only ways it could work is if we have an animated
series showing Indy and Mac working as spies, and their experiences during
WW2.(One of your recent polls showed that lots of fans would like to see this
era of Indy's life explored anyway, I know I would...) Let's leave going after
the relics and artifacts to the films. This new series would open up a whole new
world and time period in Indy's life for us to explore, much like how the
"Clone Wars" are now being explored through animation. For example:
Indy's first meeting and evolving friendship with Mac,seeing exactly how Indy
won all of those medals General Ross spoke about, spying on the Nazis and
interrupting their plans (After all, he does "Hate those guys"...sound
bite opp here, Rob), and so on. Besides, I'm sure I'm not the only fan who would
like to see Indiana Jones dressed in his full Colonel's uniform, even if it is
animated...One of my worries with this idea though, is that it could seem a bit
similar to some of the "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" adventures
showing Indy and Remy as spies during WW1.I'm curious as to what the other
Indy-Cast listeners think of this idea, and would love to hear their opinions
and ideas...
Best,

Ron:
Hey
RobThis is my first time writing to the Indy cast.I am a huge supporter of the
idea for an Animated Indy.
I have some ideas for an Indiana Jones Animated series. A lot of people have
raised concerns about Indy Animated being kiddified or dumbed down. I am
guessing that a lot of Indy fans are not particularly animation fans,
which is ok, but I know that most of you are under the impression that animation
is solely a medium for children. This is not the case.
I strongly believe that if Lucas decided to make an Indiana Jones animated
series it would not be dumbed down or kiddified.
Let’s look at The Clone Wars animated movie/TV series. The movie is PG as is
the TV series. They have clones dying left and right. The reason that it
is able to get away with slightly more violent content is because it's George
Lucas and it's Star Wars. Studios and networks give a lot of slack simply
because it's Star Wars.
I am sure were going to see a lot of things in this series that you would not be
able to see in a normal animated kids show.
Now
let's look at Indiana Jones Adventures vol. 1.Sure it was kid friendly, but not
at the expense of what makes Indiana Jones great. That barely PG-13 style
content that we all love. I mean it had Nazis and they wore Swastikas and
everything. Indy got his butt kicked and there was blood. Not to mention what
happened to that poor Nazi youth troop. It was great.
As for the time period. I don't want to see Young Indy at all. I want to see the
Indy we all know and love. I say start the series of in 1930 and span that
decade with adventures taking place before in between and after the classic film
trilogy all the way to 1939 and then some episodes in the 40's with Indy in the
OSS.Anything before 1925 I consider Young Indy and I don't want to see that. I
want to see his hatred and rivalry with Belloq develop. I want to see how he met
Short Round. I want to see Abner Ravenwood.
Oh and it MUST!!! have the Raiders March in it as well as other John Williams
themes of respective McGuffins/Characters as they may reappear in the series.
EI.
Marion's Theme, Willie's Theme, Short Round's Theme, Cross of Coronado
theme.....I could go on and on.BTW Paul Dini would be perfect to helm an Indiana
Jones Animated series. The man is a writing genious and Ethen Beavers's art
design style from Indiana Jones Adventures Vol 1 would translate perfectly to
animation.
I for one hope and pray we get an animated series. I strongly believe that
everything I know and love about Indiana Jones will be intact in an animated
show.
Hey
Rob great work on the IndyCast the polls are fantastic and is now one of my
favoirte parts of the show. Anyway I wanted to give my opinion on an Indy
cartoon series. I would love to see a weekly Indy cartoon series only if it
could be done right. Meaning I do not think it should be geared towards kids
after the death of the Indy line its pretty clear to me that kids today do not
like Indy which is understandable they did not grow up in the 80s and do not
really know the character. I think the show should be geared towards people 16
and older with mature, gritty story lines like the first three films I want to
see gruesome deaths Nazi's getting shot ect...... It would be great to see the
show on adult swim or something. Just sharing my opinion
Keep up the fantastic work with the Indy Cast!
From
Alex:
Hello
Rob,
First off love your polls its great to see
the variety of opinions out there and just talk Indy. I wanted to comment on the
"What time period is most interesting" poll from a few weeks back,
sorry been to busy to e-mail. My question is during all those time when did Indy
decide hey I want to be a teacher and why. One thought of mine is that by being
a teacher it was alot easier for him to take expeditions and search for
antiquities and still pay the bills. By being a teacher funding is also provided
for him and while searching for what he needs for the university he can also do
side missions for those seeking artifacts. So even though I voted for the WW II
time period I would like to see what really drove him into the teaching field.
Second comment is about Indy making it to an animated
show. I would love to see more Indy but if they are going to make it a show I
would prefer they do either higher detailed computer animated, like the screens
from Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings game trailer, high detailed computer
animated movies maybe one or two a year, or just bring back SPF aka Sean Patrick
Flanery for some live action Indy. I know the last one probably wont be as
popular of an idea but I loved the Adventures of Young Indiana Jones and would
really like to see live action Indy show or short movies again.
Well that's my 2 cents thanks again and here's hoping to seeing
more Indy in any form! Just hope everything doesn't get downgraded like they did
with the Staff of kings game scraping it from the xbox 360/PS3 and onto less
powerful systems though I will be buying it for my PSP I cant pass up a new Indy
game.
Thanks,
Alex from San Antonio, TX
From
Eddie:
Hi,
Rob. Eddie here, the SoCal Reporter! I just wanted to put my two cents into the
discussion of the Indy Cartoon idea. I say a cartoon or series would be great!
As long as we stay away from Young Indy. I'm sorry but we have enough info
already, I mean, it was great but think about it, we have enough hours on DVD to
make even Sean Patrick want to scratch out his own eye balls! I say we keep to
the 30's Indy. Enough info already to make us search into his other stages of
life, but still a lot to explore. Also, without a doubt you want action no
matter what and Indy was most agile at that age, and most kids will recognize
that Indy. Another thing is if they go with a cartoon, make sure the animation
is high quality. If you've seen the new Nickelodeon show, Penguins of
Madagascar, you'll know what I mean. Characters you love that were known in one
state of animation, then in thier own show they get reduced to Saturday Serial
animation, that when compared to what you know, seems "Cheap!". Let
LucasArts take care of it. After all as the teaser for Staff of Kings said, They
"are trusted with the name and likeness of the good professor."
That was my second and third things to get off my mind. My first priority
about a Indy show is the writing. I think that if you want a good action show,
and I mean adventure action, not war action like, well, the Clone Wars, you want
the people who wrote the Marvel Comics. The talking scenes were brief and they
kept up with the action. There were great cliffhangers and surprisingly good
stories that when they ended you could actually pick up an issue that was 20
issues behind or ahead and see the same Indy you just saw on another adventure,
like a sitcom's formula. Same place or person that you have different stories
with, that can be rearranged by the network and not seem out of place. That
helps with the rewatchablity that I talked about with young Indy, by the way I
want to thank Annie for sending that nice message about her family and Young
Indy. Not all Indyfans are alike and glad to hear it! So those are my thoughts
on an Indy series.
Oh, by the way, to go with my opinion question on Indy's gear, on theraider.net
I looked into the (need of repair) Indy's gear section and I found this
paragraph that seems to be a nice answer to the question
"For almost a decade now, the Internet discussions on Indy’s
"gear" have gone on nonstop. This is understandable because the
clothing Harrison Ford wears in the Indiana Jones films is not overtly a costume
like Darth Vader or Lara Croft. His clothes are real clothes, and can be worn in
various combinations in everyday life, provided you leave the gunbelt and
bullwhip at home of course."
I guess if Mitchell Hallock hasn't responded yet, that's his answer, just a joke
Mitch. Like you said on Indyfans and the Quest for Fortune and Glory, you have
friends everywhere now, even here on the west coast. I will actually be going to
Comic-Con San Diego on the last day this Summer. I hope to see you there and
maybe fill my role as "reporter" and do a report on or from there.
Signing off, This is Eddie, the SoCal Reporter, If adventure has a TV Series it
should soon be in the making.
From
Mitch:
Hey
Guys -
I had a thought after talking with Sean Flanery last week when he talked about
how much he still loved the character and wants to see more films with Harrison
Ford.
But
wait, whay about the missing years? From 1938 to 1951 (we can pick up
"Mystery of the Blues" as Harrison Ford's Indy and move on to Crystal
Skull).
Sean
is now 42 (soon 43), is physically fit and could easily be the older Indy
character and we can see what he did behind enemy lines when he was a Colonel in
the US Army, meet Mac and do a bunch of other adventures like the old
"Young Indiana Jones" Chronicles. Imagine its "Band of
Brothers" or "Saving Private Ryan" with Indy walking through.
Think
it's a crazy idea?
I
don't think so.. televeision has changed a lot since the early 1990s when Young
Indy was on.. there are more channels, networks and other formats (direct to
DVD, online programming, etc.). So you can easily find an outlet to show them.
Plus, Lucas' love for history/education/entertainment can be induldged as
viewers can watch Indy pass through major world changing events.
In
one of the "Young Indy" comics, a valet tells old, eye patch Indy that
he enjoyed reading all of his books, implying that "Raiders", "TOD",
and "Last Crusade" were just embellished stories of Indy's quests. It
was then I always thought that the onscreen Indy (Harrison Ford) could exsist in
a fictionialized "Hollywood" interpetation of Indiana Jones, while the
TV version (Carrier, Flanery and Hall) was inteneded to be the more realistic,
real-world character who lived through all these historical moments and met
these famous people, but had a quieter life.
I
would watch it - and like I said Flanery is the perfecct age, and perhaps
hindsight would teach Lucas to infuse more action in some of these stories as
opposed to some of the duller "Young Indy" episodes. Lucas is talking
the live action "Star Wars" series and he already has The Clone Wars
animated show - what's another few millions dollars for this project?
What
do you think the fans would watch it?
It would give us material to talk about for years!
Talk to you later -
Mitch
From
Rick:
Hi
to all the Indy-Cast folks,
I’m Rick Lamoureux from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Tonight I stumbled onto
your webpage and listened in on podcast #59. Being an Indiana Jones Guru,
I felt I had hit the jackpot. You guys put together a fantastic show.
The email submissions request part of the program really stands out for me. I
have a lot to suggest or point out when it comes to Indy’s world. So now,
thanks to the Indy-Cast platform my thoughts can be heard. I only hope Mr. Lucas
will listen in.
Here are a
few directions that I would love to see the Indiana Jones franchise move
towards. Before the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was cancelled, a
further season was plotted out. You can actually search the internet for
these lost never produced plot sketches. The series was heading towards
more action. One plot had Indy encountering Belloq for the first time.
Mitchell-Hedges was to be the real historic character and the story revolved
around the crystal skull. So how excellent it would be if these stories could be
filmed.
My other Indy
hope would see production of a series of TV movies based on the Bantam
books, the German novels, along with the Marvel and Dark Horse Comics.
The first thing is to scout for an actor who could play Indy from the early 1920
up to the late 1930ies. As much as I grew to accept Sean Patrick Flanery in the
role the guy physically didn’t have Harrison fords stature. We need a bigger
guy here. Also his face and voice did not resemble Mr. Fords much.
We need a dead ringer. Flanery was solid in the acting department, so the
“new” Indy actor would also need to be convincing that way.
Yeah, it would be a tall order to find a guy who would match up to this, but I
am sure he is out there waiting for the call.
Why would George Lucas want to do this? Is there a profit to be made? Well
there is no question that Mr. Lucas would “want” please his fans by engaging
in this project, but how much would this production cost and what kind of
returns could be expected. With the Billions of dollars in his estimated
net worth along with his power he has in the movie industry the money is
available for sure. I think a full time production company should be
formed with the exclusive mandated to produce 3 or 4 movies per year for the
next decade. With this kind of organisation the bugets should be
reasonable. Say 3-5 million (I’m guessing) per flick. Some of the
specialty channels will pick up these movies followed by the DVD /Blu Ray
releases. Keep in mind that there is world wide fan base So countless
overseas channels could also be expected to order up the series for broadcast.
I feel that the worst case senero would be to hit the break even point. So that
is no lost.
Everyone gets paid and the Indy fans are in heaven.
Thanks for hearing my Indiana Jones dream.
Ps. To the
Indy-Cast editor, I wrote this at 4 am so the grammer and what not might be a
bit strange. So I you do consider using this email on your show please
feel free to omit or change or correct any part of it.
Thanks
Rick Lamoureux
